Kurôzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. And in large ways: the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurôzu-cho are pulled ever deeper, as if into a whirlpool from which there is no return...

Reviews/Avis

Doug

Can the Platonic form of a shape attack a small town both mentally and physically? (Apparently yes.) If I liked existential horror or creepy black-and-white animation I would certainly want to see more of this.

Braden

This one seems fairly typical for Junji Ito, and I'm not sure what to make of it beyond that. The problem I always have is I need some form of relatable context to process a story. The story takes place in a small town, with fairly normal people, but it goes off the rails way too fast for me so i have trouble getting invested. Perfect Blue worked because it was essentially a stalker story/murder mystery, but everything else was normal. It had me wondering if the MC was going mad or if there was soething else going on. This, on the other hand, I checked out after the first few minutes. It is just not for me.

Michael Eh?

It's been a while since this was announced and it's final release. Creepy as hell and then some. As if the whole town is being pulled into a black hole. Spiraling into madness. Hard to believe this is the same author of the manga "Michael" a cute cat but maybe a balance to the madness of this story.

Mr. G

Incredible audio and music. The use of black and white as a style choice was very good. The hand drawn sky adds to the spooky, fever-dream atmosphere.
