Sayonara Lara

Long, long ago, there lived a mermaid princess named Lara. She was raised with love by her father, the king of sea and her sisters. One day, Lara fell in love with a human prince who lived on land. It was a forbidden love—one that was not allowed in the world of mermaids. Still, Lara journeyed to the surface. With a potion, given to her from the witch Grace, she became human. But the potion came at a cost—fail to find true love, and she would turn into foam and vanish into the ocean. Though she was a princess of the sea, Lara chose love. Yet, her wish went unfulfilled and she vanished into the sea. Two hundred years later, Lara awakens once more, in Lake Biwa to finally search for her true love.

It seems this is the anime adaptation of the little mermaid.
There seems to be more to the witch in this version, since it is unclear what her motives are.
The animation style reminds me very much of shows like Utena and Saint Seiya.
It wasn't necessarily a bad adaptation, but this was never really a favourite story of mine or anything, so I found it a bit dull.
People who do like the little mermaid would probably find this more interesting.

Neat interpretation of a nearly two century old romance novel. I've never been a fan though, as I can't get past the whole "trading your voice to be human" deal; just breaks my heart every time. Art style somewhere between cute and bishounen anime, targeted towards a younger female audience. Last act of the episode flips the story on its head, and is taking the viewer into uncharted waters, pun intended.

The pilot is mostly just a recap of The Little Mermaid, so it's hard to predict what the other episodes will be like from that (except maybe for the school girl with boxing gloves?) So possibly interesting?

Michael Eh?

Unlike Disney's rendition of the Little Mermaid, the studio actually gives credit to original author, Hans Christian Anderson. A nice touch, not a byline in small type but full screen for length of time. Interesting take that they force the little mermaid from the fairy tale past into modern day world. Makes me wonder how the story will take the story from here.
