While the series has a somewhat slow buildup up to its halfway point and really picks up around episode 6 it unfortunately throws in too many ideas from left field in the 11th episode and suffers from having way too many ideas that could have been explored either earlier in the series or through a second 13 episode cour. With these changes half of the main cast are sent to the sidelines and hardly have any involvement in the plot during the second half of the show.<br /> <br /> Despite these issues though the series still succeeds in dealing a considerable amount of drama in a way that might be easier to relate than that of Angel Beats' earlier half and like Anime News Network notes the love story could have remained solid even if the psychic elements didn't pan out. Overall, while not a stellar effort from Jun Maeda and PA Works the series is still generally enjoyable and I'd give it overall a 7 out of 10. I'll split up the first part of my review into two viewpoints: the first for those who have seen the older Universal Century Gundams (particularly Mobile Suit Gundam up to and including Victory Gundam) and the second for those who have stuck to Alternate Universe Gundams like Wing, Seed, or 00. I'll occasionally call Reconguista in G by its prototype name G Reco since that's way easier to type.<br /> <br /> First off, for us UC fans, this is Tomino way after he's recovered from his depression so if you enjoyed his other &quot;happy&quot; works like Turn A Gundam or Overman King Gainer you'll probably find a lot to like here. His dialog and narrative <br /> are still running at breakneck pacing and he still has the penchant to create vast, detailed, interesting worlds so this may be the best main series Gundam we'll have the chance to watch since Turn A. Besides the other obvious notes about Tomino's directing style G Reco also shares some visual influences from Eureka Seven (same character designer) and Xam'd.<br /> <br /> For the AU fans, uhoh, this is going to take some getting used to. Toshiyuki Tomino is very much rooted to faster paced directing styles that were used in the 1970's and early 1980's so expect to be completely confused by his characters' exclamatory, almost random non-conversations and quick jump cuts to completely different environments. You'll probably notice that this anime has a bit of an old school feeling (the animation direction is emulating the style of Turn A Gundam from 1998, which was the last hand drawn Gundam) so don't expect to see the tight visuals that Kyoto Animation, Shaft, Production IG, or Madhouse use for their modern television series. If you're able to tolerate the constant narrative whiplash then you might find a series that is VERY different from your typical Gundam with a vastly detailed world and complex characters, even if you have to quickly read between their lines and rewatch episodes to catch their psychology.<br /> <br /> Overall, since I fall squarely in the UC fan base, G Reco is probably the series I was looking most forward to for the 2014 Fall season and up to episode 5 (which I had just finished as of this writing) it's probably my favourite show of the season. Aldnoah.Zero builds up to the obvious masterfully. They build up the background of the story in the background while setting up what will obviously happen in a bystander view of the main characters. It will be interesting how the main characters will fall into place in the second episode. Wish all (mecha) anime was this well written and produced.<br /> <br /> ==Jason==<br /> Writing this review having seen the (at the time) recently aired episode 2. Oddly I'm seeing a lot of parallels to Turn A Gundam as well, if that series had been directed by Tomino in his &quot;kill-em-all&quot; or depressed state from the '80s. What sets Aldnoah.Zero apart from the other recent mecha series, though, is the tightness of the execution, ranging from the great cinematography of the missile sequence of the first episode to Hiroyuki Sawano (the composer for Guilty Crown, Blue Exorcist, Attack On Titan, Gundam Unicorn, and Kill la Kill) epically orchestra bombing the series' highlights; various elements which add to the whole even if the premise itself isn't terribly original.
